The Internet of Things

For millennia, the fastest way to Abiquiu was by walking. Over time, technological revolutions (horse, train, car) have gradually shortened the distance. Because of these revolutions, the region has seen military conquests, the atomic bomb, modern housing developments, and tourism.

The internet, the latest technological revolution, has reduced the distance between every place on earth to zero. Until now, access to this technology has been restricted to consoles and computers. But another technological revolution, intent on eliminating the need for intermediary devices, may be on the horizon.

Embedding the internet inside everything, the proliferation of a so-called ‘internet of things’ would further shrink the distance not only between oneself and the rest of the world—but also between oneself and technology.
