El Rito Solar Array

Facing threats of climate change and declining investment potential for oil and gas, in 2017 Kit Carson Electric Cooperative in Taos County pledged to provide 100% daytime solar energy to its users by 2022.

Northern New Mexico College, in the meantime, had begun considering re-opening their historic original campus in El Rito. The two organizations collaborated to reach their goals, planning a seven-acre solar array on campus property which would contribute 1,949,919 kilowatts per year to Kit Carson, and offset the high costs of electricity preventing the campus from reopening.

This array was slated to be finished in 2017. As yet, construction has not yet begun. The project now hopes to break ground in October 2018.
